Political Animal?

In 1982 a dog stood for Parliament representing "The Monster Raving Loony Barking Dog Mad Dog Party". He was a Springer Spaniel named Bob and was owned by Lord David Such ( Screaming Lord Such).

High Intentions

Some dogs can climb trees. In South America two hunting dogs descended from English foxhounds, the Treeing Walker Coonhound, and the Treeing Tennessee Brindle do this in search of their prey, racoons and opossums.

Rich rewards

In 1932 the American millionairess, Ella Wendal left a record legacy of 15 million dollars in her will to her pet Poodle.

Terrier prolific

Britain has produced more varieties of terrier than any other nation.

Eureka!

In 1966 a dog called Pickles found the stolen World Cup Trophy under a bush in South London.

Gongs for all

In 1973, to mark the Centenary of the Kennel Club, medals were given to all "Best of Breed" winners at Crufts

How rare?

In the 1945 edition of The Observers Book of Dogs, the following well known breeds were classified as rare, and no pictures were available:- Briard, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Large Munsterlander, Lhasa Apso, Weimaraner, Bearded Collie, American Cocker Spaniel, Italian Spinone, Leonberger, Giant Schnauzer, Bichon Frise, and Basset Fauvre de Bretagne.

Cold Noses

Husky dog's noses go dry at night so that they don't freeze up in the sub-zero temperatures.

One of the family

Pekingese were so highly treasured by Chinese rulers, that when an Imperial Peke had puppies she didn't suckle them herself. They were suckled by human wet nurses just like the Emperor's own offspring.

Blushing beauty

The ancient and beautiful Pharaoh Hound is the only dog who "blushes". His large upright ears and his flesh coloured nose turn bright red when he is excited, upset, or happy. These dogs which are descendants of the now extinct Tesem are the National Dog of Malta, where they now roam free.
